According to the researchers, the richness of Cuba’s tradition is typified by the Havana Book Fair held each year in the capital and then across the country.

"Cubans enjoy one of the richest and most deeply embedded literary cultures in the world." As most socialist countries did at some point. That's how people traveled, that's how they escaped the everyday life - they read, and they read a lot. And then, when they read enough they said: That's it, we want to live what we only read about... (only to find out that it wasn't all that much better in real life.)
